A Rose in the River

Standing below Templin Gardens in downtown Fergus, you are witness to a marvelous cascade of water from the Grand River. It flows into a large pool. I wonder how many lovers have stood there. This is where the idea for the song came from. A young soldier overseas, closes his eyes and pictures himself back at that very spot with the woman he loves. He tells her of friends that won't be returning from the war. For each of these friends they will throw a rose in the river.

A ROSE IN THE RIVER©
Music & Lyrics by Paul Hock 1997 ©

WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES, I SEE YOU STANDING
BY THE RIVERS EDGE WHERE, WE GAZE AT THE POOL
I GIVE YOU A ROSE, FROM THE GARDEN ABOVE
I KISS YOU, AND TELL YOU, I LOVE YOU

I CAN'T SEND YOU A ROSE, FOR NO FLOWER GROWS
NO RIVER RUNS WHERE I STAND
BUT WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES, I'M STANDING WITH YOU
ON THE BANKS OF THE OLD RIVER GRAND

SOME FRIENDS THAT WE KNEW, WON'T COME HOME TO YOU
IN THIS WORLD THEY NO LONGER STAND
BUT FOR EACH ONE WE KNEW
WE WILL THROW A ROSE

IN THE WATERS, OF OLD RIVER GRAND
I CAN'T SEND YOU A ROSE, FOR NO FLOWER GROWS
AND NO RIVER RUNS, WHERE I STAND
BUT FOR EACH ONE WE KNEW
WE WILL THROW A ROSE
IN THE WATERS, OF OLD RIVER GRAND

WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES
I SEE YOU STANDING.
